Dearest Mail, October 4th 2011

My passion for you began at a young age. I would sprint from the car to the mailbox everyday upon arriving home and investigate the box marked with our address for any small, perfectly wrapped treats. My grandmother had a certain genius for correspondence. She would send us gorgeous packages in exciting shapes, and while the contents were not always as magical as the packaging, there was always that delicious moment before we tore them open when the identity of the objects within were a glorious mystery and only as limitless as our expansive imaginations...

So, thank you mail. From the bottom of my heart I love you with a never ending passion. You have always been there for me through my myriad of pen-pals and penaquaintances. It has been a pleasure growing old with you. Here's to many more years together and piles of magical packages!

My mum had to read the letters to us as we couldn't speak latvian. Inese, my cousin would include drawings and pictures of her family, stamps, coins and other fun treasures from her far away country!

The Original Envelope Project

Last year when I was visiting my brother Josh in Fitzroy VIC, he mentioned that I should go and check out the window of Meet Me At Mikes. He said that they were having a letter writing competition and that their window was FULL of mail... I skipped down Brunswick street to see for myself.

The competition was about to end and I didn't have time to send in an entry... But whoever it was that did win, holey-dooley they were in for a treat! The window was choc-o-block FULL of mail.

Meet Me At Mikes's super successful mail competition was the inspiration to host our own competition this year at Newspaper Taxi. We are a vintage ephemera, stationery store so it made sense to give our stationery loving customers the chance to get crafty and have a chance to win some awesome prizes.

So, A big thanks to Pip for the inspiration to start our own Snail Mail competition. I never got the chance to enter the original Envelope Project at Meet Me At Mikes! I only pressed my nose against the glass and admired the beautiful handwritten letters that were sent in from all around the world... Xx

Everyday more and more mail is coming in. My postman is just as happy to see me (and hear my squeals of delight) as he hands over a delicious bundle of "real" mail each day!

Do you wish to get more mail?

Then... SEND MAIL!

Write a "we love mail" letter to Newspaper Taxi and include a little stationery related treat inside. Just a little something from your desk.

It could be a pretty card, some stickers, an envelope label, glassine bags, some vintage papers, a luggage tag, a handmade envelope, string, ribbons, some vintage stamps or a roll of tape. It doesn't have to be expensive, just a little something you can spare from your own stationery collection.

We will be filling the window with the mail that we receive, posting pictures of the contents of the letters online and then drawing 3 lucky winners.

We will choose 3 of the letters at random from all the mail we receive and 1st prize will win the contents of ALL the mail. That's pretty exciting! Imagine how much fun it will be for the lucky winner to have a stationery filled parcel delivered to their door.

Last saturday was such a great night, the book signing for Pia Jane Bijkerk was a huge success! Newspaper Taxi was packed full of people who had come along to meet Pia, have their copy of "my heart wanders" signed, say hello and enjoy some champagne and sweet treats... We had an exceptional turnout of customers old and new, stylists, neighbours, friends and designers. Some super special lucky door prizes from Logan Wines and Paper Boat Press, lots of smiles and some good old fashioned chin wagging! Thanks to everyone that came along, it was a fantastic night, I hope you loved it as much as we enjoyed hosting such a special event. Xx

Here's a little peek at some gorgeous vintage gifts that I sourced and wrapped for a client at the end of last year.
I had so much fun selecting each gift, choosing vintage pieces and complimenting them with new items as well, then the best part was wrapping all of the presents!

I wrapped all of the gifts with a mix of dark green paper, vintage maps, grosgrain ribbons, ripped silk fabric and a bit of japanese masking tape for a dramatic country craft look.... then topped each one with a handmade gift tag What do you think?

Yesterday I went into Paddington to visit my friend Sarah O'Sullivan in her Ceramics studio at the National Art School where she is currently completing her Masters.

Sarah is a friend of mine and I have heard lots about her new body of work and seen some of her gorgeous ceramics brooches, but I was so amazed and inspired after my first visit to her tiny little studio that I just had to share it with you!

My partner Matt and I both walked in and the first words to come out were... "Amazing!" The room was glowing. The afternoon light was shining through the windows along one wall and you could see snippets of the city in between the translucent ceramics drying on the window sill. Talk about a stylish, inspired Sydney studio. The walls were covered in vintage postcards, images of birds... a collage of found objects, carefully curated, pinned and tacked up like a wallpaper of inspiration. It was just heavenly...

I would just like to thank everyone for coming to our party last night, we had an amazing time.

It was lots of fun, the food was fantastic, I was SO busy I didn't even get a single bite of the Asparagus tart! Although I did have a few Raspberry macaroon's...

It was really lovely to get to know you all a bit better and make some new friends... Thanks too for the lovely Christmas presents.

The Logan wine went down a treat, I know now for next year to order lots more champagne! Xx

Red Letter Studio is a boutique graphic design studio in Melbourne Australia, specialising in custom invites and stationery.

I love summertime, coffee and my family not necessarily in that order.
What do you love about stationery...
I love design and paper, so stationery is the perfect combination! A beautifully designed card, printed on a great paper, or the perfect invitation which talks about the event and sets the tone for a wedding, or a birthday party, just gets me super excited. Yep I'm a stationery design geek!!
How do you find inspiration to create a collection of products...
I just love trawling blogs and the internet for inspiration. Creating a mood board is usually my first step in the design process and one of the most fun, looking for ideas and adding my own unique twist.

Why should we write more letters...

Snail mail is so sweet and personal, getting a letter or parcel in the post is very exciting.

What do you like about paper...

I love the texture of paper, and I especially like the smell of fresh ink on a nice heavy weight recycled card stock - oh yeah!

Re-used papers, Kraft brown paper, found objects, string, ribbons, newspaper, and fabric.

Spending my first Christmas day with my husband.

What do you love about the holiday season...

Spending time with my extended family, finding the perfect gift and wrapping it up all nice, and not feeling guilty about the amount of chocolate I eat.
